Wow - so I was graced with this call today on my cell... of which I have caller id. The number when it first came thru said "Egypt" & read like a foreign number +20 2 8034170 so of course I didn't answer it. I don't know foreign numbers perfectly so that may not be the correct number of digits & what not but I knew enough not to answer it. Then the voicemail (visual vm) popped up & the number looked like a national number 1-202-803-4170. Word for word the message read: This is the Internal Revenue Service. This message is in reference to a criminal lawsuit filed against you. You case ID number is ... The moment you receive this message I need you or your retained attorney of record to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. My number is 202-803-4170. Don't disregard this message & do return the call now. If you don't return the call & I don't hear from your attorney either then the only thing I can do is wish you a good luck as the situation unfolds on you.
Mine sounded like a woman, but others have reported a man from my research. If you answer this call or return the call you could be screamed at, cussed at, told they will come to your job to arrest you, threaten to beat you up, etc. They use spoof numbers & can even call you back making it look like 911 is calling you back. At first it sounded like a recording more than anything, but towards the end it started to sound more human so probably using a voice disguiser. They will ultimately demand $5000 or some other amount on a prepaid Visa or some other untraceable payment method.
Remember if there is a problem the IRS will warn & warn & warn again AND ALWAYS BY MAIL - NOT BY PHONE. The IRS does not jump straight to criminal proceedings nor do they call. This is not legit & I blocked the number. Remember anything legally important or dire they ALWAYS have to send you something in writing. If it's really important like the IRS it will come certified or if it's a lawsuit you will be served by a lawsuit server. If you don't know the number, just let it go to voicemail. Don't feed into these abusers. If you are really concerned about this call – google the IRS 800 number & call them directly. They will explain this scam to you in detail.
