Claiming to be from Beckham, McCormick and Schmitt. Never actually stated it was a law firm. They never spoke to me, but they left a voicemail. Claimed that they wanted to talk about my "case", that there was possible legal action against me, and stated that there could even be criminal action taken against me.
Chances are you got this over some debt that you had a long time ago and either didn't pay and/or paid but the "debt" is still being purchased by debt collection companies and pawned off on whomever is willing to pay pennies on the dollar. Check the statue of limitations in your state, chances are it's too late or at the very end if these idiots are calling you now: http://www.bankrate.com/finance/credit-cards/state-statutes-of-limitations-for-old-debts-1.aspx
Just as a reminder, you cannot file criminal charges over a debt, only civil. To be informed of the debt from a collection agency, they have to send you a letter stating who they are, what the collection attempt is for, and how much the debt is for. (Side note: I've received no letter from anyone ever regarding any debt.) Also, since they threatened criminal action, they broke the law.
The 213-493-9800 phone number is one that is controlled by VoIP bulk reseller who sells to telemarketers. The toll-free number they gave on the message used to be held by a lawn care company in Florida less than a month ago. Also, if they were even remotely credible, I would be able to find their "firm" almost instantly online. It doesn't exist online; it's just a bunch of last names strung together to sound like a law firm.
Are you getting this call? Record when they called. If you talked to them, take notes on what EXACTLY they said. If they left a voicemail, save the recording. If your recording is anything like mine, it's FILLED with Fair Debt Collection Act violations. At the very least, report the violations with the CFPB: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/#debt-collection. If you want to really go after them, contact the CA Attorney General: https://oag.ca.gov/contact/consumer-complaint-against-business-or-company, contact their phone provider: +1 866 388 7258 or http://www.bandwidth.com/report-potential-aup-violation.
