My advice would be to
1) STOP SENDING THEM MONEY & ask them to send you a letter with the information of the "said bill" to your records (they normally will) & I've also had some agencies tell me they "can't send me any letter for my records that they have already sent me a letter" & I then tell them "well if you can't satisify my request for a letter then I can't satisify your request for payment....good day"
2)REVIEW your 3 credit reports, if you don't already know you can request free copies annually at.....AnnualCreditReport.com - It's the only official site explicitly directed by Federal law to provide them.
I've reviewed mine & disputed a few, too I've gone through my report (starting with the smaller amounts) & contacted the collection agency to see if they will offer a "settlement offer" which I've been lucky at a few so far that have so I've been working my way to paying off debt, try it & see how it works for you :)
