Follow up to my previous post - I called Verizon at their service phone number and not the one in the text, in order to confirm it was from them. It was indeed.
In my case, with unlimited data, email and a big call package, I couldn't guess why there was any issue. It turns out that this month I sent/received a bunch of texts which cost about $13 (at 20 cents a pop since I don't have a texting package of $10 a month), and then they offered to sell me on a text package. I don't text much any more, and this texting was a one-time thing with a relative who came from out of town and liked to text, so I turned Verizon down on getting a package. Not sure if this was a legit overage alert or a way to sell text packages.
