I received a call from a live caller in a boiler-room environment who asked for me by name but had trouble hearing my response. He then switched over to a recording giving a sales pitch. This seems to be a way to get around the anti-robocall regulations and conveniently makes it impossible to request that the third-party telemarketer stop calling.
The recorded sales pitch was for the National Police & Trooper Association, who claim to support the families of fallen police officers. They're actually a nonprofit, but they're not a charity: it's the International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO, and according to their filing with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection, zero percent of the money the collect actually goes to the program.
