'This is a debt collector, Bay Area Credit Services, 1000 Abernathy Road, Bldg. 400, Suite 195, Atlanta, GA 30328; their corporate office phone numbers are 678-229-5010 and 800-454-2227. They have been calling me to collect a debt that is not mine. I happen to be an attorney. I have written and called their office to demand that they stop calling. You can do the same, whether you owe the debt they are trying to collect or not. Tell them that you have consulted an attorney, that you know your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and that if they do not stop calling you that you will take them to court. Do not give them any information about yourself except your name and the phone number you want them to stop calling. Demand that you be taken off their call list. I had no idea how rampant abusive credit collection was until I moved and was assigned a new residential phone number. I have a fairly common surname and have received debt collection calls for just about everybody with that surname. I have successfully taken three collection agencies to court, and have made suing these people more or less my hobby for the last year. There are law firms that advertise help with abusive debt collectors on the internet--contact them. These are easy cases to win, and they should take your case on a contingent fee basis with no charge to you. Again, do all of this whether you owe the debt or not. Even if you owe the debt, they do not have the right to harass you by phone or otherwise; you have the right under federal law to demand that they stop calling you.
