This number came up on my cell phone caller ID twice tonight, once at 6:22PM and a second time at 8:51PM. No message was left the first time but the second time I got a voicemail message that sounded like a busy office or a shopping center where a lot of people are all talking at once. Since I didn't recognize the number, I didn't answer the phone. I'm not sure who they are or what they want but I have gone ahead and blocked the number so they can't call again.

I landed on this page resulting from a Google search on this number, (913) 982-0016. As a user of the web-based Skype service, I made a test call to my cell phone and this is the number displayed. The last time I made a test call to myself, probably a year or so earlier, it was an International, i.e. 011+ number that displayed. A lookup of the 913-982 office code reveals the switch is on 11th Street in downtown Kansas City although the carrier is Verizon Communications, having acquired the former WorldCom, which was the holding company for Brooks Fiber Communications, which is listed as the operating company for the 913-982 exchange.

Thus callers from this number will likely be calling from outside the U.S. since they are using Skype's web-based service for a fraction of what they would otherwise pay to their local telephone carriers for international calls. You will also notice significant variations in the quality of the connection, which is subject to the overall amount of IP traffic between them and the PSTN gateway in Kansas City. So, in short, the only identity for this number is a Skype gateway based in Kansas City. The actual caller can be anywhere in the world with an Internet connection and a Skype account.
