I usually tell them that I have to lookup my credit card bill to find the current interest rate, then lay the phone down and go for a short walk. Have been gone as much as 15 minutes and came back to the phone and they are still waiting. I would never give my credit card number out, but would give them an invalid number, as you suggested.
