I received a pre-recorded message identifying the caller as the Internal Revenue Service legal issues department. The message gave a return phone number, stating that unless I immediately returned the call, a warrant for my arrest would be issued. I called the number; I was shaken and cannot recall the name of the man that answered although he did identify himself as the IRS Legal Issues division. I told him I had just received a cryptic message. He knew my name and asked for the name of my attorney. I said I didn't have one, and he said I would be arrested by the end of the day. I asked what this was about and he relayed that it involved a problem with my tax returns. I asked if I had time to take a shower, and the call was disconnected. I then called my tax accountant; she called the local IRS office, and called me back to say this was a scam. The IRS never, NEVER, makes phone calls ... if problems exist, you would be inundated with months and months of paperwork. Arrests are not generally part of the process unless their months of paperwork are ignored.
