Maybe. The IRS will automatically assume that the amount listed on the 1099-C is accurate and expect you to include that amount in your ordinary income when you file your tax return. Depending on the other income you earn and your tax bracket, the result could be a larger tax bill or smaller refund.

Caller indicated the IRS is filing suit against me. I asked if he was an employee of the IRS or US government. He said yes. He wanted my phone number so they could call back. I gave to him but he could not get it right. He had a very strong Tamil accent and was not understandable. After repeated attempts to get the number right I hung up.

I'm getting 4-5 calls per day from this number. I've told them I'm not interested. I believe this is a student loan relief scammer. I am already on the do not call list, and feel these people are harassing me at this point. I believe they should be shut down.

An individual with an accent seeming to be a person from India called and represented himself as being from Microsoft Operating Systems. The person answering the call immediately suspected something was not correct because the computer in question is an Apple. The victim asked for a number to return the call and was given 646-810-6453. Upon calling back, a male with a heavy accent usually associated with those from India, said that he was a manager and that the victim should speak to "Joseph". In both instances, the call recipient terminated the call. I advised the recipient to terminate all calls immediately from Microsoft Operating Systems, Microsoft Security, the Security Center, or any other unsolicited call about computer systems. I further advised that since such the discussions are with swindlers, the more the person contacts them, the more likely the victim would suffer monetary harm. These are international criminals with a long line of experience of how to manipulate victims away from their personal resources.

The messages were very rude and harassing. I dont have any reason for them to call. Told them to stop. They want a file number to refer to. I dont have one & cant give one. I am reporting them for telephone harassment.
***I think its a fishing scam. What they do is illegal.

I got a call from this guy at 10pm tonight. He said he was "Joseph from Boost Mobile" and was confirming my payment for a phone. He asked for my name, address, and last 4 digits of my social security card. Luckily, I didn't give him the card info. THIS IS A SCAM!
