I just received an obvious call from a scammer who claimed they were with the IRS Tax Audit Department. The man had a thick accent and said he could not provide me any information, other than I needed to call Kevin Shaw at 850-725-2312 x179. The man also said he was from the Law Office of Jack Austin.
I looked around the internet and this seems to be a very widespread scam. Whatever you do, do not provide these people with any personal information. They may have some of your info already, but the IRS would not call you about a tax matter, they would send you mail first.
Check out the IRS website of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration for more information on this scam. http://www.treasury.gov/tigta/press/press_tigta-2014-03.htm
Per the press release above:
If you get a call from someone claiming to be with the IRS asking for a payment, here’s what to do:
If you owe Federal taxes, or think you might owe taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions.
If you don’t owe taxes, call and report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484.
You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments in your complaint.
